Retinitis Pigmentosa

Retinitis pigmentosa is an inherited retinal condition that causes progressive vision loss, typically starting with night and peripheral vision.

Common symptoms

Night blindness, narrowing peripheral vision, difficulty seeing in dim light, and gradual progression to tunnel vision.

Description

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited conditions that affect photoreceptor cells in the retina. Over time, these cells gradually stop working, leading to progressive vision changes.

Many people first notice difficulty seeing in low light or at night. As RP advances, side vision often narrows, which can affect mobility and everyday safety.

There is currently no single cure for all forms of RP, but support can include genetic counselling, low vision services, orientation and mobility training, and regular monitoring for associated retinal changes.
